Edgewood Academy fifth-grade students Gabriel Carmona, Alexandra Hernandez and Anh'thy Nguyen, jumped for joy when their names were announced as the first-place winners for their project “Water Filter,” at Bassett Unified’s fourth annual District Science Fair on Feb. 21 at Torch Middle School’s Watanabe Center.
“I wasn’t expecting for our project to win a trophy,” Nguyen said. “When I heard them call our names, I couldn’t believe it, it was really exciting.”
Bassett High School 10th-graders Denise Luiviano and Jade Loera received a first-place award for their project, “Acid Effects on Brine Shrimp,” which tested the reaction of brine shrimp to amounts of vinegar.
“It just feels good to win because my partner and I did work really hard on this project,” Luiviano
said. “I think that the best part is being able to tell myself, ‘If I can do this, I can do anything.’ ”
