Bassett Unified Students Create a Four-Year Plan, Discover Career Pathways

LA PUENTE – Edgewood Academy seventh-grader Natalie Perez knew that she wanted to be a photographer before she attended the Career and Technical Education workshop for college and career readiness on Feb. 28; during the event, she learned how to make her dream a reality.

“I learned that having a career in photography doesn’t make a lot of money, but for me that’s okay, I still want to do what I love,” Perez said. “The workshop gave me a list of other possible careers, just in case, and even though I feel a little nervous about it, I also feel better prepared.”

Students used California CareerZone, an interactive website where they can select future goals, such as buying a home or renting an apartment, or deciding between attending college or a trade school. Next, they filled out an interest profiler that matches their interests to careers.

This is the first year that the workshop has expanded to include sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders.

“The goal of the college and career workshop is to prepare our students for high school, college and their future career,” school counselor and workshop lead Veronica Montes said. “Early exposure to both high school graduation and A-G requirements, lifestyle choices and an interest profiler gives students direction when planning for their future.”
