LA PUENTE – From robotics to puppies, 3-D-printing to health science, Bassett Unified School District celebrated its amazing array of programs, teachers, staff and students during the second annual Celebrating Bassett showcase on May 9 at Torch Middle School’s Watanabe Center.
Bassett High School senior Joanna Vasquez, a member of the Bassett Connects Club at the high school, said the District shines.
“I think it’s important to represent Bassett Unified,” said Vasquez, who will attend UC Berkeley in fall. “Not only at Bassett High School but across the District, I know that we have the education and the ability to make a positive change in the world.”
The District is continuing in its mission to graduate college- and career-ready students by offering Career and Technical Education workshops and pathways – not only at the high school but also in middle school. Elementary students learn to code, how to program algorithms and how to sharpen their critical thinking skills in Don Julian’s state-of-the-art Maker Space.
The array of programs spanned core academics, science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), arts and enrichment programs designed to inspire creativity and school engagement.
Among the many displays, Edgewood Academy demonstrated its GATE and robotics students, Bassett Adult School and Nueva Vista High School presented electrician and high school diploma programs, Bassett High School presented health science pathway and ceramics and Van Wig Elementary presented drum and film clubs.
The puppies represented efforts by Bassett Connects to support mental health among students, part of a social-emotional health component at the high school. The 3-D printer was one of several tools representing Bassett’s innovative take on classroom technology.
“Our teachers and staff, our students and our families are what make Bassett Unified School District incredible,” Superintendent Debra French said. “Our annual showcase is only going to get better and better, because the District is going to keep doing better and better for its students and community.”
