Bassett Unified Students ‘Shred Hate’ at Rally Led by L.A. Dodgers and X-Games Athletes

LA PUENTE – Edgewood Academy eighth-grader Sophia Rodriguez joined Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill and X-Games gold medalist Jordyn Barratt on stage for a special Shred Hate Assembly led by No Bully in partnership with ESPN, Major League Baseball, the X-Games and the Los Angeles Dodgers Thursday, May 8 at Edgewood Academy.

Rodriguez spoke to her fellow students about how bullying is not the way they should be communicating with each other.

“I like how we have students talking to students; I think it helps the anti-bullying message hit home,” Rodriguez said. “Being a part of a school that follows the Shred Hate program has all helped me a bit too, so I’m very thankful and hopeful that it will help other people too.”

No Bully is an organization that seeks to end bullying through community in sports. Through a partnership with ESPN, MLB and the X-Games, the group encourages kids to “choose kindness, Shred Hate” and practice empathy.

“No matter what anybody says, that doesn’t define who you are,” Hill said.

“Doing nothing doesn’t help,” Barratt said. “If you see something, say something, be kind.”

Hill autographed bobble-heads of himself and handed them out to students who answered baseball trivia questions. The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that they will treat students to a Dodger game next week.
