Dear Parents and Community Members,
It is with great pride and enthusiasm that I introduce myself to you as the new Principal of Edgewood Academy. I am honored and humbled to join the Bassett Unified community and work alongside you to educate our children and prepare them to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Since I am new to the community, I’d like to introduce myself so you. Upon graduating from Glendale High School, I attended California State University, Los Angeles while working full-time. I graduated and continued to work in the financial sector for five years before deciding that my passion and calling in life was in education. My professional journey in education began at Fontana Unified School District where I served as a classified office staff employee before becoming a teacher in 2013. I became a fully credentialed math teacher and taught Honors Trigonometry, IB Mathematics and Calculus, as well as Algebra and Geometry for several years at the high school level. Since I hold a second single subject credential, I also taught some business-related courses including basic computers and entrepreneurship. In 2017 I represented four counties as one of the top 10 high school teachers of the year, which was an amazing honor, and was nominated by my peers as teacher of the year. Upon earning my second master’s degree and a doctoral degree, I became an assistant principal and served in that role for three years. I am now proud to join the Bassett Community as a Principal.
On a personal level, I live with my husband of 17 years, 2 children ages 10 and 13, and a dog named Mango in Rancho Cucamonga. I enjoy reading, trying a variety of foods, and traveling. My favorite movies of all time include Lord of the Rings, the Martian, and Star Wars. I cannot wait to get to know the children of Edgewood to support them in their educational journey now and in the future!
My goals for our school in the next few months are to build relationships with not only the staff and students, but also the community. I will work tirelessly with our faculty and support staff members to make Edgewood a welcoming and supportive environment. We need our parents’ and community’s help to give Edgewood students the best education possible. Additionally, my goals are to pay close attention to:
Instruction
Use of Data & Assessments
Communication
Parent Connections
Community Connections
Social-Emotional Learning
Curriculum
Technology
School Spirit
Student Recognitions
Staff Recognitions
STEM
Extra-Curriculum Programs
Campus Events
Before, in the new few months, I will meet with parents individually and in groups to talk about how we can work together to build a united effort to help our kids grow and thrive!
I realize that it’s a very difficult time we are all going through right now due to the COVID19 pandemic. Please be assured that we are taking all appropriate safety measures at Edgewood Academy as recommended by the CDC. In fact, we are going beyond the recommendations by doing temperature checks and using shields in classrooms. As a parent myself, I know we get nervous about sending our kids under these circumstances. However, rest assured that we are doing everything we can to keep our staff and students as safe as possible!
Please see the bell schedule attached, as well as our school year calendar. We are so EXCITED to welcome our students and staff!
With sincere gratitude,
Dr. Ruzanna Hernandez
