List of winners and a PowerPoint of their work inside...

Six Bassett Unified students who won top spots in their campus and District Spelling Bee contests will compete against the county’s best spellers in the Los Angeles County Scripps Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by the Parents Association of North Hollywood. The students will include Van Wig Elementary School fourth-grader Chelsea Xu, Don Julian fifth-grader Pedro Rojas, Torch Seventh-grader Stephanie Galvez, Edgewood sixth-grader John Barreto, Van Wig third-grader Alesha Shafeeq and Sunkist fourth-grader Edison Lee.

Edgewood Academy fifth-grade students Gabriel Carmona, Alexandra Hernandez and Anh'thy Nguyen, jumped for joy when their names were announced as the first-place winners for their project “Water Filter,” at Bassett Unified’s fourth annual District Science Fair on Feb. 21 at Torch Middle School’s Watanabe Center.

Edgewood Academy eighth-grader Andrea Moreno strapped on a smart watch and
cranked up the stereo to showcase that music with a fast beat would boost her heart rate while slower tunes would have a much smaller impact.

Bassett Unified School District TOSA’s Tom Covington and Michael Jephcott began their “TOSAs Talking Tech” podcast in 2015 to assist BUSD educators in professional development. Since then, the program has gained devoted listeners across California, who find the TOSA’s insights to be invaluable. Covington and Jephcott discuss their 100th podcast and what tech innovations educators can look forward to in the coming year.

A Don Julian Elementary second-grader, Joseph Valdez, battled 10 rounds as one
of the last three contestants in the Bassett Unified Spelling Bee’s kindergarten through second-grade competition until just one thing stood between him and first place: The word “penalty.”

A podcast launched in fall 2015 by two Bassett Unified teachers on special assignment (TOSAs) celebrated its 100th podcast this month and notched its 70,000th download by educators who are keen to learn ways to integrate technology into their instructional plans.
